Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon

Penned by Kavi Pradeep, composed by C. Ramchandra and brought to life by Lata Mangeshkar, ‘Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo’ is an Indian patriotic song which commemorates the Indian soldiers who died during the Sino-Indian War in 1962. The song was first performed live by Lata Mangeshkar on 26th January, 1963 at the National Stadium in New Delhi in the presence of President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, on account of Republic Day (26th January, 1963) which was just two months after the end of the war.

Mere Desh Ki Dharti

One of the most memorable patriotic Indian songs, ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ is from Manoj Kumar’s movie, ’Upkar’ which was released in 1967. The film held the top spot at the box office in 1967 and themes around the India-Pakistan War. This golden song was penned down by Gulshan Bawra and performed by the legendary singer Mahendra Kapoor.

Maa Tujhe Salaam

The title track of A.R. Rahman’s studio album, ‘Vande Matram’, ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ is ripe with love and admiration for our nation. The song explores the diversity of our nation while conveying strong sentiments of unity and nation-devotion amongst the people. The album, ‘Vande Matram’ has earned the distinction of being the largest non-film album and received much credit for its Patriotic emotions.

Rang De Basanti

The title track of the 2006 movie, ‘Rang De Basanti’ was composed by none other than the patriotic musician, A.R. Rahman and was brought to life by Daler Mehndi and K.S. Chithra. This song has touched the heart of every Indian since its release in 2005 and continues to do so till date.

Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera

A soundtrack from the 2004 movie ‘Swades’, ‘Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera’ captures the sentiments of a NRI (about his homeland) who returns to his nation. The lyrics of this beautiful song ware penned down by Javed Akhtar and brought to life by A.R. Rahman. This is definitely a song to play on repeat in case you’ve been out of the country for a while!

Sandese Aate Hai

Originally penned down for the 1997 film, ‘Border’, this song contributed immensely to the success of the film at the box-office. ‘Sandese Aate Hai’ is a patriotic song written by Javed Akhtar, composed by Anu Malik and sung by Roop Kumar Rathod and Sonu Nigam. The song describes the sacrifices and longings of the home-sick soldiers at the borders. Called as “a heart-touching song which became the nation’s anthem”, the song went to win several awards in 1997 and 1998.

Chak De! India

The title song of the 2007 Hindi sports film, ‘Chak De! India’, this song has turned into an anthem for Indians worldwide, especially to express support for the Indian team during sports events. The lyrics to the song were penned by Jaideep Sahni and the song was sung by Sukhwinder SinghSalim Merchant and Marianne D'Cruz. A song that took the nation by storm in 2007 and that still remains an audience favourite today.

Ae Watan

One of the latest additions to the list of Indian patriotic songs, ‘Ae Watan’ from the movie, ‘Raazi’ beautifully captures the sentiments of a girl who is being married into a Pakistani family in order to spy on them for India. The song has both a female and a male version sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Arijit Singh respectively. The lyrics to this beautiful song were penned down by Gulzar.

Tu Bhoola Jise

A soundtrack from the 2016 film, ‘Airlift’, the song, ‘Tu Bhoola Jise’ sings praises of our nations reminding Indians worldwide that they would always be cared for and protected by our ‘Mother India’. It explores how Indians staying away from home may forget their nation but the nation never stops caring for them. This moving song was penned down by Kumaar, composed by Amaal Malik and sung by K.K.

Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka

Belonging to the 1957 film, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka’ is probably the best of all the numerous melodies from the movie. The song was sung by two famous singers – Mohammed Rafi and Balbir and is another great song to hum along with, even today – over 60 years after its release!
