Yesterday we saw the second clash of January month – Kangana Ranaut starrer Panga and Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Street Dancer. Let us see how much each film had collected on the first day at the box office.
Kangana Ranaut is back with yet another performance driven film, Panga, after two mind-blowing performances last year – Manikarnika-The Queen Of Jhansi and Judgementall Hai Kya, and accompanying her is Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, who directed magnificent films like Nil Battey Sannata and Bareilly Ki Barfi. Obviously, audience had high expectations from the sports drama, Panga.
Panga earned exceptional reviews as can been seen from BookMyShow.com but competition from Street Dancer and Tanhaji prevented it from taking a decent opening. Panga opened to somewhere between 5-10% in the morning shows but could not pick up in the evening and night shows later, collecting somewhere between Rs 2.85-3 crores (as per early estimates). The sports drama need to recover lost grounds in the first weekend only if it has to make any impact at the box office.
Street Dancer 3D
Street Dancer earned good reviews as well from critics and users as per BookMyShow.com which led the film to open well in the morning shows to around 25% occupancy across India.
Follow up to the hit franchises like ABCD and ABCD 2, the trailer of Street Dancer was promising (59 million views) while the songs have generated good buzzword which connected with youth but the collections were fair on the first day with around Rs 10-11 crore considering it being a big budget release (Rs 95 crore – Production cost is Rs 85 crore, Promotion and Marketing is Rs 10 crore) from 3700 screens. The musical dance drama faced severe competition from Tanhaji which is doing extremely good, especially in Maharasthta.
