World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year.

A United Nations initiative, World Environment Day was first observed in 1974. Since then it has been the premier UN instrument to create awareness about the protection of  Earth’s environment.

The aim is to preserve flora and fauna, curb pollution, encourage sustainable consumption, reduce global warming, et cetera, with the help of governments, corporations, celebrities, non-profits, communities, activists and the general public.

The theme for World Environment Day 2020 is ‘Celebrate Biodiversity’. ‘With 1 million species facing extinction, there has never been a more important time to focus on biodiversity,’ says the UN.
