2019 was a year wherein one came across several films where female characters were driving the narrative. Even in a film like ‘Gully Boy’ which revolved primarily around the male protagonist, the female lead (Alia Bhatt, in this case) had a very important role to play. The same goes for Kriti Sanon in ‘Panipat’, a film which was dominated by male actors but gave the actresses, including Zeenat Aman who had just one scene in the film, enough scope to show their mettle. A few top actresses managed to retain a stronghold at the box-office while a bunch of relatively new faces registered their presence at the box-office. Here is a look at the top-5 female actors of 2019.
- Kriti Sanon
The much delayed ‘Arjun Patiala’ fizzled out at the box-office in no time and ‘Panipat’, despite bringing in acclaim, could not really set the cash registers ringing. Despite the commercial failure of these two films, Kriti Sanon managed to become the most successful actress of 2019 owing to the success of ‘Luka Chuppi’ and ‘Housefull 4’. While the moderately budgeted ‘Luka Chuppi’ raked in huge profits as it collected just a little less than 100 crores at the domestic box-office, ‘Housefull 4’ went past the 200-crore mark at the box-office. With ‘Mimi’ and ‘Bachchan Pandey’, 2020 looks mighty promising for Kriti.
- Alia Bhatt
Alia Bhatt is, perhaps, the numero-uno actress today if we take into account the way her films have performed in the last couple of years. 2019, though, proved to be a year where she faced success and failure both. While her turn as the feisty Safeena in ‘Gully Boy’ was appreciated, her sincere performance in ‘Kalank’ went unnoticed owing to the commercial failure of the film. The length of her role in ‘Gully Boy’, when one compares it to that of Ranveer Singh, was not much but she got a host of wonderful scenes to shine and shine she did! Four important films – ‘Sadak 2’, ‘RRR’, ‘Brahmastra’ and ‘Gangubhai Kathiawadi’ – are slated to release in 2020.
- Taapsee Pannu
‘Badla’ had the towering presence of Amitabh Bachchan but it was a film which was riding heavily on Taapsee Pannu’s shoulders. ‘Game Over’ received some acclaim but could not really do much at the box-office. She stood out in the ensemble cast in ‘Mission Mangal’, a film which managed to cross the 200-crore at the domestic box-office. ‘Saand Ki Aankh’, despite releasing alongside a much bigger film like ‘Housefull 4’, continued to collect at the box-office for weeks at a stretch and was a plus fair in the final tally. Four films, central roles in all and three successes – that is a good score!
- Kiara Advani
One actress who has been steadily climbing up the box-office ladder in the last couple of years is Kiara Advani. The actress, who started off with a non-performing film like ‘Fugly’ (2014), has managed to do well for herself and is well heading towards the big league. This year, she featured in ‘Kabir Singh’, which turned out to be one of the highest grossing films in recent times. The recently released ‘Good Newwz’ is already a hit within a few days of its release and is on its way to become a super-hit.
- Kangana Ranaut
Though Kangana Ranaut did not really deliver a clean hit this year, the pull she has over the box-office can be gauged by the fact an expensive film like ‘Manikarnika The Queen Of Jhansi’, which was riding on her shoulders, managed to collect approximately 93 crores at the domestic box-office despite mixed reports. ‘Judgementall Hai Kya’, too, was an average success. The kind of numbers these films did despite limited appreciation bears a testimony to the fact that Kangana enjoys a good hold at the box-office today.
