1. Gwalior (Rs 6,588)

A historically rich city, Gwalior was once the capital of the Scindias and is popular for its majestic forts and beautiful palaces. Take in the imposing Gwalior Fort, built in the eighth century and one of the largest in the country. While here also visit Teli ka Mandir, which at 100 feet is the tallest in Gwalior, and Man Mandir Palace. Spend time at Jai Vilas Palace, built in a mix of grand European styles and has been converted into a museum. Gwalior is also home to the final resting place of one of India’s great musicians Tansen. Don’t also miss the Sun Temple, Tigra Dam, Gopachal Parvat, Gujari Mahal, and the Saas Bahu Temple. If you want to go on a bit of a road trip, the historic town of Orchha is just a three-hour drive away and has some fascinating monuments of its own including a wildlife sanctuary.
