Aamir Khan and Reena Datta's love story was nothing less than a filmy Bollywood story as the ex-couple was neighbours and would often stare at each other through their windows. That is why the song, Mere Saamne Wali Khidki Mein, from the film, Padosan (1968), sums up how the love story of B-town's Mr Perfectionist, Aamir and his ex-wife, Reena blossomed. But it was Aamir, who fell for Reena first and as per the reports, he tried multiple times to express his die-hard love for her, but sadly, he only had to face rejections. And just when he gave up on his efforts to woo Reena, she reciprocated, and they got married on April 18, 1986.
However, 16 years of married life and two kids later, Aamir Khan and Reena Datta went separate ways and were granted divorce in 2002. After his divorce from Reena, Aamir found love in director-producer, Kiran Rao and they got married in December 2005. Aamir and Kiran had embraced parenthood with the arrival of their son, Azad Rao Khan via IVF. In 2021, Aamir and Kiran announced their divorce, ending 15-and-a-half years of their marriage, and their decision to co-parent Azad.
When Aamir Khan had made an appearance on Karan Johar’s chat show, Koffee With Karan Season 6, he had candidly spoken about his first marriage, divorce and the wonderful relationship between his ex-wives, Kiran Rao and Reena Datta. Calling their divorce was "traumatic" for both Reena and their family, Aamir had said, "Reena and I were married for 16 long years. When we split up, it was traumatic for us and our families. We tried to deal with the situation as best as we could. Reena and I did not lose love or respect for each other post our split."
But despite their divorce, Aamir Khan and Reena Datta’s love and respect for each other remained the same and he thanked her for enriching him in many ways. Aamir had continued, "I thank Reena for giving me the opportunity to be in her life. She has enriched me in many ways. We were very young when we married. It did not mean that I lost respect for Reena, or for that matter, I lost my love for Reena. She is a really wonderful person. We were very young when we got married. I give a value to that and I'm glad that she does too."
Throwing some light on the friendship between ex-wives, Reena Datta and Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan had stated, "Reena and Kiran are both warm and matured as people. I have not contributed anything to their friendship." As and when required, Aamir had been vocal and tight-lipped about his personal life and relationships. But seems like, Aamir had decided to go with the show’s idea of ‘Stop Making Sense’ and had admitted having done two-timings in a relationship and revealed that he doesn’t cover his hickeys.
Coming back to the time when and how love blossomed between Reena Datta and Aamir Khan, it was reported that he was so head over heels in love with her that he had even written her a love letter with his blood! However, it further aggravated the situation and Reena had asked him to never indulge in such things again. Due to the religion difference, Aamir and Reena had eloped and tied the knot in 1986. In 2002, without any ugly spats and arguments, Aamir and Reena had separated but they still maintain a cordial relationship with each other.
Just how his divorce with Reena Datta was mutual, Aamir Khan's separation with Kiran Rao is also amicable and the couple will co-parent their son, Azad!
