How Aditya Chopra’s dream to make a movie like 'Deewaar' resulted in 'Mohabbatein'

Mohabbatein (2000)

Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ was a mega hit and is still considered as one of the finest love stories of modern times. After tasting success with his first venture, Aditya Chopra consciously wanted to keep away from directing another movie portraying timeless romance. He has been an ardent fan of the yesteryears classic ‘Deewaar’ and aspired to make movies of that stature and class. He spent years scrutinising script after script, but none came close to making his dream a reality.

Deewaar (1975)

That’s when he decided to go ahead with a story written by his mother – as luck would have it, turned out to be a love story. While he was still in the process of going through the initial script – it occurred to him that this was not just another love story, but a story which was contemporary and had magic to create. As he was detailing the script, the two actors who came to his and who according to him could immortalise this script were – Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. When Amitabh heard the script, he called Yash Chopra and told him that this script clearly reminds him of ‘Deewaar’. This meant a lot to a budding director like Aditya – who almost realised his dream and Yashji too.

And today, we all know that these characters are none other than Raj Aryan played by Shahrukh Khan and Narayan Shankar played by Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Mohabbatein’.
