The Academy Awards are due to be handed out on 26 April, with the ceremony delayed from its usual February date as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Just in time for the big night, one of the biggest contenders for Oscars victory is landing on Amazon Prime Video in the shape of Riz Ahmed-starring drama Sound of Metal. The service is also launching Golden Globe nominee Palm Springs and BAFTA contender The Mauritanian.

Meanwhile, there's also an exciting new anthology series with Lena Waithe as an executive producer, along with an exciting selection of classic movies arriving on the service. A double dose of Ghostbusters and an Austin Powers double bill should be good enough for anybody.

Here's everything new arriving on Amazon Prime Video in the UK this month...

New films coming to Amazon Prime Video in April

The Mauritanian (1 April)

One of the big surprises of the recent Oscar nominations was the absence of Kevin Macdonald's intense political thriller The Mauritanian. It managed five nods at the BAFTAs, including for Best Film, and was also nominated multiple times by the Golden Globes, with Jodie Foster winning the award for Best Supporting Actress.

The film tells the story of Guantanamo Bay inmate Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim), who spent years held without charge in the prison after being connected to Osama Bin Laden. Foster portrays attorney Nancy Hollander, who takes up Mohamedou's cause just as a military prosecutor (Benedict Cumberbatch) attempts to build a case against him.

Palm Springs (9 April)

It has been over a year since the time loop romcom Palm Springs debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, breaking the fest's sales record when Hulu and Neon nabbed the rights. Now, British audiences will finally get the chance to see the movie, which stars Brooklyn 99 lead Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti — aka the 'Mother' in How I Met Your Mother. They play two people who meet at a wedding, only to find themselves trapped in a loop which sees them relive the day over and over.

The movie is a smart and silly adventure, which manages to do interesting things with the well-worn time loop concept in the midst of an energetic, 90-minute romcom. Samberg and Milioti have dynamite screen chemistry and the jokes come thick and fast, along with real heart. With so much serious prestige fare around, this might be just what the doctor ordered.

Sound of Metal (12 April)

Nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Sound of Metal is set to be one of the big contenders at the Academy Awards ceremony. The movie follows Riz Ahmed — who has earned a Best Actor nomination for the role — as a drummer whose career is threatened when he begins to suffer from hearing loss. Paul Raci and Olivia Cooke are also among the cast.

The movie has earned critical acclaim since it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019. It has been hoovering up awards nominations and wins for the last few months and could be a major force to be reckoned with at the Oscars. As with so many of this year's awards season frontrunners, it will be available to stream before the big day.

Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse (30 April)

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is one of the most frequently recast and reinvented characters in cinema history, having been played by the likes of Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Chris Pine. The latest Clancy adaptation focus not on Ryan but on supporting character John Clark, and stars Michael B. Jordan. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he's tackling a major conspiracy.

The behind the camera talent is pretty high-calibre. Stefano Sollima, who made Sicario: Day of the Soldado, is in the director's chair, with Hell or High Water scribe Taylor Sheridan on board as co-writer. Expect plenty of hard-hitting spy thriller action.

Lena Waithe is riding high as one of the most compelling rising stars in TV and film. Her recent crime movie Queen and Slim was given rave reviews by critics and, last year, she voiced Pixar's first LGBT+ character in Onward. Her next job is as executive producer on this horror anthology series, created by Little Marvin.

The first season focuses on a Black family who move to Los Angeles in the 1950s during the period known as The Great Migration. They attempt to assimilate into their new neighbourhood, only to find themselves falling victim to the insidious spectre of racism.
