During quarantine, many of us have started to miss things we took for granted, like the occasional trip to the movie theater (and the popcorn and candy that went along with it). And while we're nostalgic for the candy of years gone by, we're starting to feel nostalgic for the theater experience itself, too. With the news that Regal Cinemas is closing all locations in the U.S. and the U.K., there's never been a more bittersweet time to reflect upon the moviegoing experience. Here are some of the most iconic movie theater candies that theatergoers have enjoyed over the years. Grab a box of these, pop some microwave popcorn, and cue up Netflix. It's not the same, but it's better than nothing. And for more, don't miss these 15 Classic American Desserts That Deserve a Comeback. 1 M&Ms M&Ms are the ultimate theater candy. You pour a box of them into your popcorn for a salty-sweet combo that's hard to resist. And they don't melt because of the candy coating! It's an A+ experience all around.RELATED: Sign up for our newsletter to get daily recipes and food news in your inbox! 2 Mike and Ike Lovers of fruit-flavored candy flock to Mike and Ike in the theater checkout lanes—or they used to, at least.RELATED: Your ultimate restaurant and supermarket survival guide is here! 3 Twizzlers For moviegoers who don't want chocolate candy, it's hard to resist the allure of chewy Twizzlers. Plus, they aren't crunchy, so you wouldn't have to worry about eating loudly and disturbing your fellow theatergoers. 4 Good&Plenty If you love licorice but don't want to deal with biting off a piece of Twizzlers, the licorice-flavored Good&Plenty are a solid option. 5 Sno-Caps Forget fancy nonpareils. Sno-Caps will do the job just fine. Long before sprinkles dominated '90s snacks, Sno-Caps proved that anything is better with a bit of crunchy sugar on top. 6 Reese's Pieces Blame E.T. for this one! Reese's Pieces are almost as iconic a movie treat as M&Ms are. 7 Whoppers There aren't many U.S. movie theaters where you can order a malted milkshake and enjoy it during the film. You can, however, buy a box of Whoppers and get all of that malt goodness right from a box. 8 Swedish Fish Another entry in the fruit-flavored candy cannon, Swedish Fish is a fun movie snack. The candy is less fun when you try to bring home the pieces you didn't eat, only to discover that the bag isn't recloseable and end up with a sticky, gummy mess. 9 Sour Patch Kids Sour Punch Straws are tastier than Sour Patch Kids. But Sour Patch Kids are infinitely easier to eat in a movie theater (or any other public place, really). 10 Nerds As fun as Nerds are to eat, buying these at the movie theater wouldn't bring you any favors from the other theatergoers. The rattling of the small candies within the box could be irritating if you timed your snacking wrong. 11 Junior Mints There's nothing "junior" about the refreshing flavor of Junior Mints. Who hasn't sat in a chilly movie theater, trying in vain to get to that last mint that's melted and adhered itself to the inside of the box? 12 Raisinets By now, most of us know that candy is still candy, even if it contains fruit. But in the '80s, Raisinets appealed to customers who wanted to make what was seen as a healthier alternative to other candies. They're still around if that's your thing—just don't think you're making a better-for-you choice. 13 Milk Duds You wouldn't think that candy with "dud" in its name would be such a hit, but Milk Duds have broken the mold. The chocolatey, caramel-filled balls are the perfect movie candy, whether you're in a theater or at home. 14 Cookie Dough Bites Long before edible cookie dough was available in grocery store refrigerators, moviegoers could get the batter-filled taste thanks to this iconic candy. Today, there are multiple flavors available in addition to the classic original flavor. Peanut butter cookie dough bites, anyone? 15 Buncha Crunch What '90s kid didn't add a box of this to their popcorn and enjoy the melty, chocolaty goodness? For more, check out these 108 most popular sodas ranked by how toxic they are.

Even some of the most popular fast-food restaurants took a hit during the pandemic, as sales from dine-in orders plummeted to zero overnight. Ever since the middle of March, brands have heavily relied on drive-thru orders to carry sales and now, this essential part of quick-service chains is getting a complete makeover. (Related: 9 Restaurant Chains That Closed Hundreds of Locations This Summer)According to Nation's Restaurant News, drive-thru sales generate anywhere from 60% to as much as 70% of sales for fast-food chains. Now that to-go orders are in higher demand than ever before, popular fast food brands have seen this as an opportunity to kickstart new innovations in the drive-thru lane. Burger King, McDonald's, Chipotle, Shake Shack, and Taco Bell are all among the brands that are making strides to improve the efficiency of the drive-thru lane. The drive-in concept first appeared at restaurants about a century ago, with the first one popping up in 1921 at a Texas chain of restaurants called Kirby's Pig Stand. However, the first drive-thru lane wasn't introduced until thirty or forty years later. In fact, McDonald's first drive-thru lane didn't appear until the mid-1970s.McDonald's recently introduced new menu boards to its drive-thru lane. Called, Dynamic Yield menu boards, this new innovation will enable customers to see "food based on the time of day, weather, current restaurant traffic, and trending menu item." Chipotle, which formerly didn't have a drive-thru lane, began testing Chipotlanes, which is a pickup lane for to-go meals pre-ordered through one the brand's digital channels. Now, Chipotlanes are slated to be included in more than 60% of new Chipotle restaurants. The most dramatic change to watch out for, however, is happening with Burger King's drive-thru lanes. The brand recently announced its plans for an all-new restaurant model called "Restaurant of Tomorrow" which will not only include a drive-in section, curbside delivery, food lockers for to-go orders, but also, a multiple-lane drive-thru that's equipped with a digital menu board and a conveyor belt system. Burger King locations in Miami, Florida as well as Latin America and the Caribbean will be the first stores to test this new model in 2021.For more updates in the fast-food restaurant industry, be sure to sign up for our newsletter.

One of the biggest names among all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants will soon be shutting down several locations in Florida and Georgia. The largest operator of franchised Golden Corral restaurants has just filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The 1069 Restaurant Group, which is owned by husband and wife duo Eric and Diane Holm, operates 33 locations of the popular buffet chain through subsidiaries in Florida and Georgia. The company has reported a debt of $49.7 million in their court filings, a downfall attributed to restaurant closures and a drop in sales during the pandemic. (Related: 9 Restaurant Chains That Closed Hundreds of Locations This Summer.)Like many buffet-style restaurants, the 1069 Restaurant Group ended up closing all of their Golden Corral locations in March, and only 6 have been reopened since. However, according to Restaurant Business, the company is moving ahead with plans to reopen 18 more locations by the end of the year, despite the bankruptcy. So how much will this bankruptcy actually affect Golden Corral's footprint in the two states? While some locations will most likely stay open, the company is going to be closing several locations in order to reduce their debt. A Golden Corral representative said in a statement to Restaurant Business that they are working with their largest franchisee through this bankruptcy and "anticipate they will continue to operate 24 of their 33 Golden Corral franchised locations in Georgia and Florida."The 1069 Restaurant Group will use the bankruptcy filing to reconfigure their restaurants and hopefully find a solution for ongoing service restrictions. So far, the brand has experimented with no-touch buffets, where customers essentially use gloves or napkins when touching shared serving utensils. While some buffet restaurants have switched to cafeteria-style operations, the infrastructure of Golden Corral's buildings doesn't allow for this type of service.Buffets have had a particularly difficult road through the pandemic, due to the fact that most states banned self-serve operations early on to try and stop the spread of coronavirus. During the height of the pandemic in the spring, beloved buffet chain Sweet Tomatoes (known as Souplantation in southern California) announced it was going out of business, while Jason's Deli, a chain that heavily relies on their self-serve salad bar, keeps closing more locations.Don't forget to sign up for our newsletter to get the latest restaurant news delivered straight to your inbox.
Several brands have debuted new names this year because of racial stereotypes. Aunt Jemima, Mrs. Butterworth's, and Uncle Ben's are just a few. In September, B&G announced Cream of Wheat hot cereal will get a packaging overhaul to remove the image of a Black man wearing a chef's hat because of the offensive history of the character. But one ice cream treat is the newest brand to get a new name — Eskimo Pies is now Edy's Pie.Back in June, Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream acknowledged the name of the treat can be seen as derogatory. "Eskimo" is a term for indigenous people in northern Canada, Greenland, eastern Siberia, and Alaska. However, it has been used by non-native people to mean a violent "eater of raw meat," CBS News says. The company didn't give any clues to what the new name would be until now. Edy's Pie pays tribute to one of the company's founders, candymaker Joseph Edy, according to Food Dive. He teamed up with William Dreyer in 1928 to create Dreyer's and Edy's ice cream brands. (Speaking of iconic sweets, here are 15 Classic American Desserts That Deserve a Comeback.)However, Christian Kent Nelson created the treat on a stick in 1920. It was the first chocolate-covered ice cream bar in the U.S. and was called an "I-Scream Bar," according to the Smithsonian Institution. The name changed in 1921 in a partnership with Russell C. Stover. The packaging will also change, although there is no info about the design. Food Dive speculates that since there is already an Edy's brand, the ice cream bar could take on some of the same themes. The boy in a furry winter coat with rosy cheeks featured above the Eskimo Pie name most likely won't stay, similar to the removal of the Cream of Wheat figure. There is no word yet on when the remodeled treat will hit grocery store freezers. To get grocery updates delivered straight to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter!
