Black Friday: '85% of Brits plan to spend online' and shun high street

Brits are set to shun the high street this Black Friday as 85% are planning to spend online during this year’s November discount shopping event.

Brits are shunning bricks-and-mortar shops due to coronavirus fears, with 85% saying they intend to shop exclusively online or a mix of online and in store this year with just 0.3% spending exclusively on the high street, in a new survey by money.co.uk.

Half said they would shop exclusively online this year with a further 35% saying they would do the majority of their Black Friday bargain hunting online.

Over three quarters (77%) of UK adults are planning to bag a bargain during this year’s Black Friday bonanza, the survey found.

Four in 10 respondents said they are planning to spend between £200 ($261) and £300 more this year than they did on Black Friday in 2019, with one in 10 spending £500 more.

A further 15% will splash out between £600 and £2,000 on discounted goods on Black Friday, which will happen on 27 November this year.

Brits will spend an average of £350 in this year’s Black Friday sales, according to Money.co.uk.

The most popular Black Friday purchases are likely to be clothing, with 49% of Brits saying they will be looking for fashion bargains. Beauty products come in second place, with 34% of people set to spend on grooming items.

Three in 10 (29%) of Black Friday shoppers will be looking for household items, while 29% are planning to splash out on video games and consoles.

A quarter are planning on buying a new smart TV and 24% hope to stock up on new home furnishings.

Some 23% of Brits are looking for a new smartphone in the sales, while 20% plan on shopping for jewellery.

A fifth (19%) of Brits have an Amazon Echo device on their Black Friday shopping list and 18% will be shopping for new furniture.

Black Friday originated in the US where retailers cut prices on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. The shopping event has become popular around the world in recent years, with some reports of violence between shoppers battling it out to grab the best bargains.
