Two decades ago, Jennifer Aniston inspired millions with Rachel 'do on "Friends." On the Oscar red carpet, she wasn't living up to her legacy.

She hit the carpet Sunday feeling very royal, as she told ABC's Lara Spencer. "It feels very princessy. I feel like this is very 'King and I,'" Aniston, a presenter at the ceremony, gushed of her strapless, red Valentino Haute Couture gown. She paired the dress with a Ferragamo clutch, jewelry by Fred Leighton (and "my fiancé [Justin Theroux]," she said, flashing her ginormous engagement ring), and she wore her hair down and straight.

Within moments the critics had their knives out. Perez Hilton tweeted, "I think Jennifer Aniston has a serious fear of trying new things with her hair." Most felt an event like the Oscars required trying something new, and while wearing a red ball gown was a change of pace from Aniston's usual black dresses, and the hair was just too boring for fashion critics.

Despite the backlash on the straight, simple hairstyle, some critics came to her defense. Fashion blogger Courtney Kerr tweeted, "When you've had a haircut named after you, you don't have to wear an awful updo to awards shows. Right, Jennifer Aniston?!"
