Made famous by a song 50 years ago and known for lovely ladies in itty-bitty bikinis, Ipanema is about to get even more (ahem) exposure. This posh Rio de Janeiro neighborhood and the nearby beach with the same name are bound to make for great B-roll footage as the world media descends for the soccer World Cup in June and the 2016 Summer Olympics a couple years later.
Bossa nova musicians Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes honored their favorite Rio area with “The Girl from Ipanema” in a 1962 ditty that eventually, though not initially, included words describing the girl as “tall and tan and young and lovely…”
Ipanema Beach is one of a string of beaches, also including Copacabana Beach, where many of the city’s most attractive surfers and sun worshippers socialize. This is not just a sunbathing spot, though: Pilgrims paraded along Ipanema, some bearing crosses, when Pope Francis visited Brazil last year.
