Yahoo! Movies Review: Khiladi 786

Movie Reviews

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Asin, Himesh Reshammiya

Director: Ashish R Mohan

Casting: **

This is Ashish R Mohan's directorial debut but having assisted on the 'Golmaal' series, he is quite familiar with the shortcut to the 100 crore club; sign up a popular Bollywood actor, pack in a few well-choreographed Matrix-style action sequences, pepper the narrative with clichéd slapstick humour, throw in an item song complete with pelvic thrusts and you have the perfect blockbuster that will set the cash registers ringing.

'Khiladi 786' has a plot, okay may be a mishmash of several other plots that we have seen before. Khiladi 786 aka 72 Singh (Akhshay Kumar) belongs to a family of thugs who work in collusion with the police in Punjab. While the brave fake cop has a heart of gold, his search for a life partner is proving futile. On the other hand, underworld don TTT (Mithun Chakraborty) is looking for a suitable alliance for his sister Indu (Asin).

Enter Mansukh (Himesh Reshammiya), his father runs a marriage bureau, his blunders however have ruined more marriages than his father has managed to make. Mansukh wants to prove his worth and thus, takes on the arduous task of getting Indu and Khiladi 786 hitched. Reminiscent of 'Welcome' and 'Housefull 2', the two families have to now carry out a long drawn pretense drama so that the wedding can happen.

There are some fun moments in the film but with a wafer-thin plot, the story seems to drag along for far too long. Akshay sleepwalks through a role that he has done one too many times; there is not even a slight attempt at any form of innovation. Asin tries hard to play the feisty female lead but fails to create any impression. Strong comic characters like Bharati and Jhonny Lever are completely wasted. Himesh Reshammiya manages to belt out some hummable numbers but story and acting are definitely not his forte.

Watch it if you are a die-hard Akshay Kumar fan and are willing to overlook the complete lack of any clever humour.
