This year Gandhi Jayanti will be remembered for three significant and yet different films. While the Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff became the largest opening film of 2019 beating Salman Khan starrer Bharat, Chiranjeevi’s Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy was poor in Hindi version and much Hollywood flick Joker was good at the box office.
The most awaited Bollywood film of 2019, WAR, finally hit the theaters yesterday with much fan fare and took a thunderous opening from 4000 screens across India. The advance collections of WAR which opened last Friday, was the third best (Rs 33 crore) after Avengers: Endgame – Rs 49.62 crore and Bahubali: The Conclusion – Rs 37.53 crore. The outstanding trailer (78 million views), chart bursting songs, Gandhi Jayanti holiday and early positive reviews from the audience led the action drama open to an occupancy of 70% in the morning shows across India and crossed the morning occupancy range of Salman Khan starrer Bharat which opened with 60% occupancy range. becoming the best opening film of 2019.
WAR picked post noon and got a stellar response from the paying audience, making a big impact at the ticket windows in the evening and night shows. As per early analysis, WAR had collected somewhere between Rs 50-51 crore (Hindi version) and could be challenging the Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Thugs Of Hindostan, which holds the record for the highest opening day collection in Bollywood with Rs 50.75 crore (Hindi version).
However, the opening day collections of WAR is certainly the highest opening of 2019 beating the Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Bharat, which collected Rs 41.80 crore on its first day. The budget of WAR is Rs 200 Crore (Production Cost: 180 Crore, Prints & Advertising Cost: 20 Crore). The action film is directed by Siddarth Anand and is produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films.
Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy
While WAR dominated the multiplexes and mass circuit in the North and Central India, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy dominated the Southern region. However, the Chiranjeevi and Amitabh Bachchan starrer failed to click in the Hindi version. Met with average reviews, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy collected a poor Rs 2 crore.
Welcomed with phenomenal reviews at the Venice film festival, Joaquin Phoenix starrer Joker, a spin-off character of the super hero film, Batman, impressed the audience at the city multiplexes. As per trade estimates, Joker collected a very good Rs 5.75 crore on its first day and should pick up as the days progresses. This is a very good number considering Joker not being an action-oriented super hero film but a dark psychological thriller.
