Bra Types | Demystifying 8 Types of Bras

A brassiere, or bra for short, is basically an undergarment for supporting or covering the breasts. They work well if they fit well. Your bra size isn’t the only thing you should know, as there are several bra types that work best on different clothes and activities. There are a lot of lingerie lines offering the different kinds of bras including Eva’s Intimates. You just need an idea of which bra is suitable for you.

The Different Types of Bras

Different bras have different functions, and some just work better in certain instances and situations. Knowing how to choose the right bra for you can make all the difference when it comes to aesthetics and comfort. You can make better choices with the correct underwear when you know what factors to consider.

Here’s a run-through of the different kinds of bras that you’ve probably encountered while shopping. There are 26 bra types which you can read all about on Eva’s Intimate blog, but here are 8 of them:

Push-up Bra

This bra “pushes up” the breasts with extra paddings, making your bust look bigger and firmer. Most push-up bras have underwires to support the cups, some have removable pads. This works best for women with smaller breasts or those with breasts starting to sag or lose. This can be used as an everyday bra or for special occasions where you want to show a little more cleavage.

Demi-bra (Half-cup bra)

As the name “demi” (Lat. for half or part of) suggests, it covers only until the middle of the bust with cups slanting inwards towards the middle. This could also come with pads and underwires to give a bit more volume and shape but not as much as a push-up bra could. It’s an ideal everyday wear for women with smaller to medium busts as it can give ample lift and shape, and it also fits well for many types of clothing.

Full-cup Bra

This “fully” covers the bust of a woman with a larger than the normal relative cup size. The cup extends higher up the bust  and is perceived as one of the most comfortable types of bra as it provides more support. This could either come with or without pads and with or without underwires. Bustier women may appreciate this more because it holds the bust in place better. However, this isn’t ideal for low-neck clothing style.

Sports Bra

For more rigorous activities, extra support is needed to keep the busts in place. Sports bras cover the bust and the back and evenly distribute the weight of the busts to keep them in place while you move. One type of sports bra is the compression type, which tightly pushes the bust to the rib cage to keep them from moving. The other type is the encapsulating

Strapless Bra

The distinctive feature of a strapless bra is that the shoulder straps are omitted.  The band around the chest is relatively wider to give support to the breasts. Small to medium breasts fit snugly into strapless bras. This is mostly used when the outfit you will wear has a strapless style.

Balconette Bra

Also known as “balcony bra”, this bra type is ideal for a sexier style because of the natural lift it gives the breasts. The cups are low cut horizontally, thus, more revealing and appealing when wearing revealing clothes. However, it is less comfortable and it provides less support.

T-shirt Bra

T-shirt bras are seamless and have smooth, molded cups that serve as the padding. This bra is less noticeable when wearing tight clothing while still giving enough support as the other comfortable bras. They usually come in simple colors without designs. But other than style, you can also wear it as a good everyday bra.

Longline Bra

Contrary to the simplicity of the t-shirt bra, the longline bra has wider bands under the cups often made of lace design.  The extended band can also give a shaping effect which is an advantage when wearing tight tops. These are usually padded bras with underwires that can also be used as a stylish top.
