Candice Brown opens up about her fertility struggles: ‘Sometimes your body doesn’t work the way you want it to'

Candice Brown attends the Fortnum & Mason Food & Drink awards, held at Fortnum & Mason

Former Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown hates being asked about when she plans to have children.

She married boyfriend Liam Macaulay last year in France and says the pair would love children, but she just wished people didn’t constantly ask her about their plans.

Speaking to Kate Thornton on White Wine Question Time, she said: “We've just had our first wedding anniversary… And we would love children. It's probably one of the things that pisses me off the most though, people asking, ‘When are you going to have kids?’

“I'm 34, but people just think it's alright to ask you. Like a taxi driver the other day... He was like, ‘Have you got children? When are you having them? You should be having them, blah blah blah?’.”

Tearing up, Candice went on to say: “Sometimes things don't work the way you want it to work and people don't understand that.

“People have got no idea what someone might be battling inside, what someone might be struggling with or have been the last however many years, and I think you just need to be mindful.”

The former Great British Bake Off star said it’s not something she talks about publicly.

“I don't talk about my feelings,” she said. “And I don't really open up massively about things – I've touched on mental health and stuff like that – but actually pregnancy and having kids and things…

“It's a very, very private thing. And I think, is that down to social media? Because you can put your life on social media, it opens it up for everybody thinking that they can ask you questions or touch your stomach or question or just assume: ‘Oh, you don't want kids? Why don't you want kids?’ Well that's got absolutely nothing to do with you, actually.

“People have got no idea that sometimes your body doesn't work the way you want it to and that's really hard, but people don't understand that.”

Fellow White Wine Question Time guest Kate Lawler also gets annoyed with people asking ‘the question’, which is one reason why she started her podcast Maybe Baby with fiancé, Boj.

Billed as a podcast for “for the parentally undecided” Maybe Baby is Kate’s quest to decide whether she actually wants to have children. She started the podcast because she felt in the minority as a woman who wasn’t sure she ever wanted kids.

“I thought I was the only person that felt like this until I did this podcast,” she told Kate. “I certainly didn't have any friends that share my view.

“When you get asked, ‘Why don't you want kids? That's what you were put on this planet to do’. It's not really though – not every woman – and I've been accused of pushing a feminist agenda by encouraging women not to have kids.”

The former Big Brother star is now having her fertility tested, which will feature on a future episode.

“I think maybe the reason I really want to do this fertility test is because I want to know how I'll feel if she tells me it's bad news,” she revealed. “Maybe I'll be relieved if she says you haven't got any [eggs], because then the decision’s taken out of my hands anyway.”

While podcast host Kate Thornton applauded her for doing all the research, the Virgin Radio DJ said it’s actually made her more terrified of having a child.

“It's kind of backfired,” she explained, “Because he [Boj] was hoping it would convince me to have a baby.”

“He said, ‘Why are you so scared of everything in life? You don't want a baby just in case something's wrong with it’. He was like, ‘If you think that us not having a kid will just mean we have a perfect life, you're wrong’.”

For now, Kate’s two dogs Baxter and Shirley give her all the love and joy she needs, although she realises that this may be filling the baby gap.

“I feel like if I didn't have dogs, I might want a kid. I feel like my doggies have perhaps filled a void.”

To which Candice jokingly responded that Kate might be OK having a child “if the baby was really hairy”.
