Charles and Diana's Real-Life Australia Tour Pics Say So Much About Their Marriage

Hello to you, fellow person who is watching The Crown Season 4 and suddenly needs to know every. single. possible. thing. about the royal family—starting with Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship. While the royals are reportedly worried fans will won't realize Diana and Charles' drama is fictionalized, the fact remains that most of the show is based in, uh, well, fact. Including Charles and Diana's royal tour of Australia in 1983—which The Crown depicts as a real turning point in their relationship.

According to the show, Charles and Di started the trip with a ton of tension and ended up low-key falling in love—or at least, enjoying the time they spent together with their son, Prince William. And judging from real-life photos from the trip, there's an element of truth to this! Diana and Charles look delighted during their iconic dance, and seem to be genuinely happy in many of the press and pap pictures taken. Of course, no one really knows what went on behind-the-scenes (read: did Charles and Diana have some big convo about their relationship??), but judging from these photos, the vibes were nothing short of good, not to mention extremely chic.

Here's Charles and Di stepping off the plane and into their life on tour. A little awkward, but that might just be due to the length of Charles' pants.

In The Crown, Diana was super upset to hand William off to the nanny, but she and Charles seem pretty fine IRL? Just saying.

This was a biiiiig moment in The Crown—though honestly, in this case, Diana and Charles kinda looked happier on the show than they did in real life 😬.

Diana and Charles were greeted by huge crowds throughout their tour—and though The Crown made it seem like Charles was super jealous, he seems pretty chill here. Also plz note that his carnation perfectly matches Diana's dress. Cute.

Then again, I literally had to look twice to even notice Prince Charles in this shot, so....

Unfortunately for us, The Crown wasn't able to recreate every single one of Diana's lewks—including this one where she paired a giant collared dress with the Spencer Family Pearl Choker (given to her on her 18th birthday).

But don't worry, the show blessed us with this collar instead.

One look the show did go ahead and recreate? Diana's powder blue Catherine Walker suit and matching hat.

Nailed. It.

Among the saddest moments in The Crown was when Charles was being super rude to Diana because she was tired on their trip to Ayers Rock. Truly, you can sense the real-life awkwardness from a mile away.

I mean...oof.

This was a moment of pure happiness for Charles and Diana in The Crown—and it looks like they had a lot of fun in real life, too.

Side note: The Crown's costume designer needs to win every single award ever, the end.

10/10 would wear this Donald Campbell dress in this our hellish year of 2020.
