1. Picking your modern bookcase: The size

Size is the number one factor to consider when looking for your ideal modern bookcase, as it will determine how the shelves both look and function within your space. Keep the following in mind:

• Height. Most bookcases range from 90cm to 2.5m tall. But keep both aesthetic and practical concerns in mind when choosing height. It is true that tall bookcases that fill up most of a wall typically look more expensive and formal; however, shorter ones offer the added functionality of a usable surface area on the top which can be used as a media cabinet, buffet or workspace.

• Width. Consider the width of your bookcase relative to the height. If you choose a tall bookcase, purchasing multiple narrow units instead of a single large one will offer more flexibility to add or subtract storage space as needed. If you opt for a shorter unit, choosing something wide will make the piece feel more substantial.

• Depth. Most shelves are at least 30cm deep to allow ample room for most books; however, some bookcases, especially those designed in the ladder or leaning styles, have narrower shelving. Decide what you’ll be storing in your bookcase before buying.

• The space between shelves. If the shelves on your bookcase are fixed, make sure to measure the space between them to ensure that your books and accent pieces will fit. Adjustable-height shelves offer more flexibility.

How to choose a modern bookcase

Out of all the furniture you’re ever going to buy, perhaps none will be as useful as the modern bookcase. Not only are these prized pieces used to organise your favourite novels and magazines, but they also serve as a place to display art, décor accessories, and various accent pieces of different sizes.

But upon entering the furniture store (or opening that online catalogue), how do you know which modern bookcase is the right choice for your living room / study / hallway / bedroom etc? And not to put pressure on you, but picking the right one can mean enjoying a trusted furniture piece for years (or even decades) to come. Picking the wrong one... well, that will just be a waste of time and money.
