Ab tak Chhappan (2004)

Directed by Shimit Amin, the brain behind Chak De! India and Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year, Ab Tak Chhappan was the first movie of its kind, focusing on the life of Mumbai Police force. Inspired by the story of Police sub-Inspector, Daya Nayak, Ab Tak Chhappan had a fantastic direction, taut-script and brilliant performances by the star cast, especially Nana Patekar, which turned the movie in to “Hit” status at the box office, collecting Rs 9 crores against a budget of Rs 4.50 crore.

New-bee director Sharat Katariya (10 ML Love) kept the theme of the Dum Laga Ke Haisha simple yet noble. The comedy-drama was set in the mid-90’s in the beautiful city of Haridwar about humble and ordinary middle-class business family which will remind you of classic movies made by Hrishikeah Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. The movie was intrinsic to its core right from the beginning with hilarious moments enough to tickle your funny-bone. The initial reel will definitely bring down the house when the boy meets the girl. Even the divorce scene, the fight between the neighbours was executed brilliantly that would put a smile on your face. Coming to the performances, Ayushmann Khurrana does a fabulous job as a push-over, introvert, loyal son. He made a good comeback after series of flops. New talent Bhumi Pednekar will surprise you. This was her first film and the amount of maturity she showed in her acting was astounding. Sanjay Mishra as usual was brilliant.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha had limited release (769 screens all over India) in 2015 with shoe-string budget (Rs 13 crores) and unknown star-cast. What worked in its favor – applauding performances, immensely likable story and mind-blowing script which helped the movie to collect Rs 31 crores in lifetime and becoming “Super-Hit” at the box office.
