There were three significant Bollywood films which were released today in the past years – Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu and Radika Apte starrer Andhadhun, Salman Khan produced LoveYatri and Sridevi starrer English Vinglish. Let us check how the films fared at the box office.
Andhadhun, which is directed by Sriram Raghavan, started its journey clashing with Salman Khan’s produced LoveRatri. The later film had more awareness but it was Andhadhun which audience loved and gave it a thumbs up. The dark-thriller went on to collect a mind-blowing Rs 74 crore against a budget of Rs 32 crore.
Produced by Matchbox Pictures, and distributed by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Eros International, Andhadhun was also felicitated with three National Film Awards – Best Feature Film in Hindi, Best Actor for Khurrana, and Best Screenplay
Pitted against the much appreciated Andhadhun, LoveYatri was produced and promoted by Salman Khan under his production banner, SKF Films. The trailer, especially songs and marketing were outstanding. However, the reviews were terrible and the film never took off and failed miserably at the box office, collecting Rs 12.58 crore against a budget of Rs 25 crore.
English Vinglish marked a comeback for the legendary actress Sridevi. Brilliantly directed by Gauri Shinde , English Vinglish was a tribute to the moms of India showing the character of Shashi Godbole (played by Sridevi) who despite all odds learns an alien language to prove naysayers (husband and daughters) that she has more capability than they think. It was a memorable and inspiring performance by the brilliant actress who shed her glamour image and set an example for other actresses in the Industry.
English Vinglish turned out to be a suprise hit of 2012, minting Rs 40 crore against a budget of Rs 26 crore.
