The Coronavirus has been taking over the world and is considered the next big epidemic to cause major threat to the human race. But what are the actual facts and myths around it?
Coronavirus is seriously getting on our heads and into our lives. And just like how we daily wake up to read more about it where the Internet seems full of it, we also tend to believe many myths around it which are conveniently floating on the Internet. From articles headlines as ‘Coronavirus will kill the entire human race’ to ‘Is India ready for Coronavirus’, we really need to take some time out and educate ourselves about what it really is, the threats involved and the basic precautions we need to take.
What Is Coronavirus : Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.
How They Infected Humans : Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.
Signs You Have It : Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
Basic Precautions : Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
Myths Involved With Coronavirus : It is less likely to kill you as compared to Influenza. Covid 19 has a 3 percent fatality rate which is extremely low if compared to other MERs and Sers. It is highly transmissible but not as deadly.
You Dont Needs Masks : One only needs to wear masks if the person is infected with the Covid 19 virus or if she or he is continuously sneezing/coughing. For healthy people, wearing a mask is of no use but usage of hand sanitizers is a must!
We all are NOT at risk : It is said that everyone is at a deadly risk right now which is not true. Elderly patients, particularly with lung comorbidities, and adult smokers are more prone to be facing evere or critical illness, but children and healthy younger adults are comparatively safer.
Animals can transfer you Coronavirus : Probably not! There has not been any case or any evidence of animal to human transmission of this virus but that doesn’t mean you can go on kissing your dogs or cats!
Stocking Meds : Antibiotics have no effect on viruses. The most common way to prevent is to maintain your personal cleanliness, keep washing your hands and face. Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes frequently and try coughing or sneezing into your arms not your hands.
That’s all folks! Be safe and be clean.
