After Deepika Padukone’s complaint to Smriti Irani, 5 arrested in the Padmavati rangoli controversy

Padmavati is slated for a December 1, 2017 release...

After Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone recently tweeted about how a Padmavati-inspired rangoli was destroyed at a Surat mall by miscreants, and demanded action on it, five men have been arrested from Gujarat in connection with the case on Thursday, October 19. Four of the arrested are members of the Rajput Karni Sena and one belongs to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati has been facing problems since the time it was announced. First, the director was slapped by the members of Rajput Karni Sena in Jaipur while shooting for the film. Next, the sets of Padmavati in Kolhapur near Mumbai were set on fire. Thankfully, no casualties were reported. The film’s team has been threatened by these so-called pro-Hindu groups with dire consequences if they portrayed a love story between Rani Padmini aka Padmavati (played by Deepika Padukone) and Alauddin Khilji (played by Ranveer Singh). Queen Padmavati’s husband Maharawal Ratan Singh has been essayed by Shahid Kapoor in the film. The artist who had made the beautiful Padmavati rangoli depicting Deepika Padukone’s face from the film’s poster, had first tweeted about how his work of art was destroyed by a bunch of nearly 10 men. The pictures went viral and Deepika Padukone also took notice of the same, asking for action to be taken against people who oppose the freedom of expression. Deepika had also tagged Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani on Twitter and said, “this has to stop NOW & action must be taken! @smritiirani”.

Earlier in October at the World Economic Forum in Delhi, Smriti Irani had assured filmmaker Karan Johar that Padmavati will not face any trouble on its release. She said, “I am sure law and order will be under control. The State government will ensure no miscreants disrupt any kind of interaction or display. I don’t envisage any problem. If there is any challenge, the State government will meet it.”

Padmavati stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Aditi Rao Hydari, among others. The movie releases on December 1, 2017.
