A source close to the development revealed to Pinkvilla, "The team of The Intern unanimously felt that Amit is the best choice for the film and the director too is in sync with the vision to bring the classic to India."

The source said Sharma has already prepared a draft and will work on it after his other project Maidaan is completed.

Movie: Rishi Kapoor was to essay De Niro's role

The original Nancy Meyers film told the story of a 70-year-old who joins a digital workspace as an intern.

De Niro's portrayal of a man starting something new at an old age was widely appreciated.

Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor was signed up for the role but with his unfortunate death, the film was put on hold till a replacement could be found.

Sharma, who won a lot of appreciation for the 2019 sleeper hit Badhai Ho, is now busy with the period sports-drama Maidaan.

The film stars Ajay Devgn and is being produced by Boney Kapoor.

Based on the golden era of Indian football, the film will release in October and will clash with SS Rajamouli's magnum opus Roudram Ranam Rudhiram (RRR).
