Actress Dia Mirza, responding to a follower on Instagram, has clarified that she did not marry husband Vaibhav Rekhi because she was pregnant. Earlier this month, the 39-year-old took to social media to announce her pregnancy, where she wrote, “blessed to cradle this purest of all dreams in my womb”. While the news was met with congratulatory messages from her friends and colleagues, she also faced a barrage of trolls in her comments who speculated about the timeline of her wedding in relation to this announcement.
Responding to the comment, the actor wrote, “We didn’t marry because we were having a baby together, we were already marrying because we wanted to spend our lives together.” She revealed that they discovered the pregnancy during wedding planning and didn’t announce it till it was medically safe to do so.
“This is the happiest news of my life, I’ve waited many, many years for this to happen,” writes Mirza, emphasising that she would not hide it for any reason other than medical. She added that the only reason she was addressing these remarks was that there must never be any shame attached to this journey and that women have the choice to parent while being single or in a marriage. She concluded by saying, “As a society, we must unstereotype our idea of what is right and wrong, and train ourselves to ask what is fair and what is unfair.”
Mirza is just one among the many celebrities who have been trolled over their pregnancies, but surely it is time for people to take a step back, respect women’s agencies and acknowledge that women have a right to their own bodies and privacy even if they are in the public eye.
