The sequel to Karan Johar’s 2008 comedy, Dostana, featuring John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan was announced amidst much anticipation in June 2019 with Kartik Aaryan and Janhvi Kapoor, to be helmed by director Colin D'Cunha. Soon after, newcomer Lakshya was announced to be joining the cast. The film went on floors in November 2019 in Amritsar but had to be halted in March 2020, owing to the Coronavirus-induced lockdown in the country. It was supposed to resume shoot after the restrictions were eased, however, there hasn’t been any development yet.
A source close to the development informs that the reason behind is scripting issues. “A portion of Dostana 2 was set abroad, however, due to the current pandemic, there are several regulations on international schedules of shoot. And the makers are preferring not to put anyone’s safety at risk and move back that abroad schedule to India. Therefore, the shoot had been put on hold to make changes in the script to suit the Indian setting,” the source shares, adding that the changes haven’t been well received by the makers yet. “With the changes in the script, the makers are not very happy with the course of the narrative and hence the shoot has been getting delayed, waiting for the desirable screenplay that supports the concept. Dostana had set a bar for its sequel and the makers don’t want to bring that down,” the source adds.
Kartik, who recently recovered from Covid-19, began shoot with Ram Madhvani’s Dhamaka in December and was on his next schedule for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 when he caught the virus. As for Janhvi, she recently wrapped up Aanand L Rai’s Good Luck Jerry and had a theatrical release with Roohi last month. Reportedly, the newcomer Lakshya has already bagged his second project opposite Shanaya Kapoor and Gurfateh Singh Pirzada in a romcom under Dharma Productions.
