23 years into the film industry without having any godfather rightly proves that impossible mean I M possible. That is exactly what Shah Rukh Khan has taught us. A commoner from Delhi to 'The King Khan' of Bollywood isn't a cake walk. He started of his journey on small screen playing the role of a commando in 'Fauji' (1988). Where hard work meets destiny his big screen debut came back in 1992. Rest as they say is History! So let's turn the pages and go on a roller coaster ride of The King Khan's 23 glorious years in Bollywood right from those romantic films to action packed blockbusters.
Since his big screen debut in DEEWANA he managed to make the audience his deewana. His debut film turned out to be the second highest grossing film in that year which gave his career a roaring start. Down the year between mid-1992 to 1993 he did 5 more films- CHAMATKAR, DIL AASHNA HAI, RAJU BAN GAYA GENTLEMAN, KING UNCLE, MAYA MEMSAAB which didn't make a great impact at the box office.
After Mid 1993:
You need to think out of the box to reach a level where people cannot even think of reaching. Similar were the thoughts of SRK. He started to play negative roles like the bold characters and a pyscho rolls in DARR and BAAZIGAR. To everyone's astonishment they turned out to be super-duper hits. He also bagged the Best Actor Award and was nominated for various other categories. He carved a niche for himself and people started to compare him with the legendary Rajesh Khanna
So from here, his actual journey to become the 'King Khan' commenced.
He bagged the best critics award for KABHI HAA KABHI NAA and also this film is one of his favourite movies. In the same year, he also starred in ANJAAM which failed to impress.
His pairing alongside Salman Khan in KARAN ARJUN which turned out to be a blockbuster. Later in 1995 he was also the lead actor in films like GUDDU, ZAMAANA DEEWANA, OH DARLING! YEH HAI INDIA!, RAM JAANE and TRIMURTI which never made a great impact at the box office. Then came the most iconic movie- DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE(DDLJ). It had drama, romance, action, comedy- you name it and the film had all the elements needed for it to become a blockbuster. Also, SRK paired along with Kajol became the most loved on-screen pair and till date, it remains as the favourite of many people. Not only that, the film also had some scenes that will never be forgotten; like the famous train scene. This specific scene had such an impact that many Bollywood movies have incorporated it. After this film, badshah Khan was nicknamed Tom Cruise Of India.
With the passing years, his fame just multiplied and he bagged various films. He played roles of a army man, business man, a saacha desh premi, gunda and various other role which makes him a versatile star. ENGLISH BABU DESI MEM, CHAAHAT, ARMY, KOYLA, YES BOSS, PARDES, DUPLICATE, DIL SE.., BAADSHAH were some of his films average films in the span of 1996-2000.
In the year 1997, his movie DIL TO PAGAL HAI, which depicts the love lives of the dancers in a musical dance troupe was a big hit at the box office. One of his dialogues in the film, 'Pyar bahut baar ho jaata hai ... lekin mohabbat sirf ek baar hoti hai. became quiet famous which many lover-boys still use to impress girls.
Next in the row was KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, which was a love triangle. The film was extremely successful in India and abroad. It became the highest grossing Indian film of the year, and the first Bollywood film to enter the UK cinema top ten. The famous dupatta scene, his dialogue- Main ladkiyon ke peeche nahi bhaagta ... ladkiya mere peeche bhaagti hai are some of the highlights of the film. Not to forget, his cool locket, basketball as a sport, friendship bands and many more such things became like a trend after this film!
21st ERA-2000 to 2005:
It is said that as we grow old, we lose our charm but that's not the case with Shah Rukh. In fact, it is the completely opposite! He had a number of films under his belt!
We may fall short on words if we had to describe the amount of hard work King Khan has put in. But, it was best summed by the megastar, Amitabh Bachchan. "SRK is the rage of the country he is a superstar and loved by millions. He is a very hard working actor and doesn't take anything for granted," quoted Big B. His versatility helped him reach higher peaks and he went on to break his own records.
Another film under his belt MOHABBATEIN became the highest grossing film in the overseas markets that year(2000). It was a romantic film by the most dramatic actor and it also marked the debut of six actors in Bollywood.
His other films, PHIR BHI DIL HAI HINDUSTANI, JOSH, HUM TUMHARE HAIN SANAM, YEH LAMHE JUDAAI KE, PAHELI, SWADES were moderate at the box office.
Then came the rows of hit like DEVDAS, CHALTE CHALTE, KAL HO NAA HO,MAIN HOON NA and also the star studded family entertainer KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM. K3G broke the opening cash in record.
