It’s goodbye and good riddance to Paul, but Vinny is feeling conflicted about his dad’s send-off. Will he find himself alone in the church?
Plus Kim loses consciousness after a shock fall (and, no, Faith isn’t responsible this time around!). And Matty has news about the possibility of some upcoming surgery. It’s all you need to know about your week ahead on Emmerdale 12-16 April, 2021.
Vinny struggles at Paul’s funeral
The day of Paul’s funeral dawns, but should a man who caused so much misery in the village be mourned? It’s a problem preoccupying the Dingles, with a highly-strung Mandy to be seen speaking directly to Paul’s coffin and commenting that he doesn’t deserve a funeral at all.
However, her words are overheard by Vinny, who tells Mandy that she ought to be ashamed of herself. Yet in the end it’s just Vinny who’ll be witnessed walking behind the hearse all alone, having rebuffed Liv’s offer of support. But reading the eulogy is another matter altogether and while in the church, Vinny soon finds himself struggling and ends up fleeing. It seems like the old saying, “no one had a good word to say about him” may be literally true in the case of Paul.
Kim’s shock collapse
Home Farm business boss Kim Tate can usually be found threatening unseen employees down a phone line (“do I have to come down there and sort things myself?!”), gleefully shafting a rival or washing down a snide putdown with a swig of brandy.

Well, next week, the booze may still be present, but the sniping is about to be cut short when – following her latest showdown with son Jamie – she starts to feel woozy and disoriented before collapsing to the floor.
Even though Kim eventually comes clean to Gabby and Lydia as to why she’s stumbled, I'm forbidden from revealing the reason. But so comically evil has Kim been in recent months that I half expected her to start shrieking, “I’m melting! I’m melting!” like the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz.
Matty’s surgery drama
Finally, Matty confides in his mum that he has a consultation and assessment to get on the waiting list for lower surgery, but Moira wonders whether he wants the procedure for Amy’s sake rather than his own. Welling up, Matty explains the difference the op will make to his life and that Amy is actually unaware that a consultation is on the cards.
Some typical soapy complications then arise when Amy gets worried that Matty hasn’t returned any of her calls, while Moira gets anxious about breaking her son’s confidence and urges him to reveal all.
But, luckily (and perhaps uncharacteristically for Emmerdale), things are actually set to work out for the best. Because when Matty explains why he was so nervous about talking, Amy tells him that he should do whatever’s right for him and she’ll support his decisions step of the way. You see! It’s not always unremitting gloom in soapland!
