The conventional norms define parenthood as a sacred calling consequential of the conjugal relationship between a man and a woman. But every individual, regardless they are married or not, has the right to become a parent, and the desire to start a family doesn’t have to be limited to married people alone.
There can be several reasons for someone to remain single, but that doesn’t mean s/he has to forego the desire to raise a child. While in the West, there are several examples of celebrity parents who remain single, in a conventional society like India, the concept of single parenting is often welcomed with raised eyebrows.
When Sushmita Sen adopted a baby girl in back in 2000, she had to overcome many legal hassles. It took her almost six years to finally get a nod from the adoption authorities who feared whether the actress’ decision was a mere publicity stunt.
In 2010, while adopting her second child, the beauty queen had to face fresh troubles. As per the Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act, it wasn’t allowed then to adopt two children of the same sex. Sushmita later won her appeal at the Bombay High Court, and thus played a significant role in the amendment of the adoption law in India.
It’s ridiculous that Sushmita still has to encounter questions regarding marriage.
Veteran actress and dancer Shobana is another famous single parent; the national award winning actress adopted a baby girl, Anantha Narayani, in 2010.
Recently, when Karan Johar made the announcement of the birth of his twins — Yash and Roohi — it was received with mixed responses. Things weren’t really different for Tusshar Kapoor either, when he let the world know about the birth of his son, Laksshya, via surrogacy last year. These two men became a fodder for trolls in social media.
Johar recently opened up about the emotional trauma he had to go through as his premature babies spent time in the neonatal intensive care unit.
“Even the most anticipated events can sometimes leave us shaken, confused. And events that occur without any warning can turn our worlds on their very heads. My children were born two months premature and worryingly underweight. Like any person in this situation and on the brink of fatherhood, my heart sank,” he said. (Courtesy: India Today)
Singer Ricky Martin, who became a father to Matteo and Valentino via gestational surrogacy in 2008, once said in a radio interview that the most difficult question he had to face was when his kids asked whether they came out of his belly. But the singer had a perfect response to that: “You were in my heart and you are still in my heart,” he said.
