Gambhir fumes as Dhoni steals 2011 WC win credit

The former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir found himself in the eye of a social media storm on April 2, 2020, the ninth anniversary of India's 2011 World Cup triumph.

Gambhir slammed the Twitter handle of a cricket portal after it posted a photo of MS Dhoni hitting the winning six against Sri Lanka in the final with the caption: "The shot that sent millions of Indians into jubilation."

Gambhir replied to the tweet, saying: "Just a reminder. World Cup 2011 was won by entire India, entire Indian team and all support staff. High time you hit your obsession for a six."

The tweet was seen by many as Gambhir's furious swipe at Dhoni with whom he reportedly shares a frosty relation. Many times in the past as well, Gambhir has shown his displeasure over the media giving Dhoni the lion's share of credit for the World Cup victory.

However, there are many who sympathise with Gambhir's hurt as he (Gambhir) was the one who top-scored with a crucial 97 in the final at a time when India were tottering in a big chase.
