A 55-year-old grandmother has been left with serious injuries after she was brutally attacked in her own home by another woman.

The victim was home alone with her young grandson when the woman knocked on the front door.

She proceeded to violently assault and stab the woman in what police have described as a “brutal and unprovoked attack”.

Following the assault, which happened at around 4.15pm on Wednesday (November 13) on Beresford Street, Manchester, the woman stole a laptop and fled the scene.

Her 55-year-old victim was taken to hospital with significant injuries to her upper body, arms and head and is in a stable condition, police said. Her grandson was checked by paramedics and had no visible injuries.

Detective Inspector Mark Astbury, from Greater Manchester Police’s City of Manchester Division, said: “This was a brutal and unprovoked attack and we are currently treating it as a case of attempted murder.

“Undoubtedly this will cause concern among the local community and residents, but I want to stress that we are doing everything in our power to trace the woman responsible.

“This is a particularly unusual attack in that the victim was subjected to a violent assault within her own home and I must make it clear that we will not tolerate this kind of violence on our streets.”

He urged anyone who may have been in the area or seen anything to get in touch.

Police said the offender is described as a black woman in her 20s with braided, shoulder length hair. She was wearing dark clothing with an overcoat that goes just below the waist as well as black trainers with white soles and a large dark green bag.

It is believed she has a distinctive walk with her right foot facing outwards. She is believed to have fled the scene on foot towards Claremont Road after the attack.
