Shah Rukh Khan – naam toh suna hi hoga. To world he has been called by many names – Actor, entertainer, producer and even marketing genius. We give you a Shah Rukh Khan who is a businessman – Midas whose wishes can change everything he touched turned into gold.
Either you love him or hate him but you cannot deny the popularity of Shah Rukh Khan both in domestic and international arena which has manifolded over the years. King Khan has not only established himself as a superstar in Bollywood industry but also had spelled magic in the entrepreneurship domain. Coming from a very humble background, Shah Rukh Khan is the perfect example of rags-to-rich story who has not only made it big in the movie industry but also has ventured into sports, marketing and media.
They say if you start knowing yourself, you will better succeed in life. Shah Rukh Khan understood his strengths and weaknesses. He started with negative roles in Bollywood and slowly grew into a romantic charmer. He did experiment with few roles but failed miserably. He remained focused to the place where he was most comfortable and came out with success. He knew that he has chocolate-hero image, enduring personality full of wits and humor which works well with young generations, especially girls. He realized that he does not have looks of Salman Khan or skills like Aamir Khan but Shah Rukh Khan has established him as a wholesome entertainer and he has done it quite well.
Unlike Aamir Khan who goes into a character of the film, Shah Rukh Khan sells his brand to make it a success story for the investors. Remember Ra.One ? The sci-fi super hero film was bashed by critics and audience. It was one of the most expensive film released in 2011 and Khan started promoting the film 200 days before the movie release with 25 local and international brands including Sony PlayStation, McDonald’s, Videocon, Nokia, Coke, Cinthol, Indian Grand Prix, ICC World Cup, ESPN Star. Result – Even though movie did a break-even business at the box office, Shah Rukh Khan got a solid ROI from it.
Zero released last year and was bashed by critics and audience left and right. It was the most expensive film produced by Khan (considering the budget of Rs 200 crores) in collaboration with Colors Yellow productions, owned by director Aanand L Rai. However, Shah Rukh Khan already recovered Rs 130 crore through telecast rights, music rights and in-film branding. A trade source revealed, “The satellite rights have apparently been sold at a whopping sum to Sony Pictures. Plus, Shah Rukh’s standing collaboration with Netflix has helped him bag a lucrative deal with the streaming giant for the film’s digital rights.”
Met with average to below average response from both audience and critics alike, Zero brought the total collections close to Rs 99 crores which was a huge disappointment. The good news was that Zero did a fine business in the Overseas market (in Pakistan Zero had the 3rd best opening after Sultan and Sanju), closing the world wide collections of Rs 210 crore, making a good ROI for Shah Rukh Khan.
The failure of Zero affected Shah Rukh Khan badly as he pulled out Saare Jahaan Se Accha which would have been another experimental film. However, King Khan came back with a bang in 2019 with a taut-thriller, Badla, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu. Produced by Shah Rukh Khan, under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment, Badla went on to become the highest grossing film of Amitabh Bachchan with Rs 88 crore (approx) against a budget of Rs 25 crores (all inclusive of prints and advertising cost (Production Cost: 16 Crore & Prints & Advertising Cost: 8 Crore).
Shah Rukh Khan also struck a solid deal as he sold satellite rights of his 22 Films at an eye-popping price. Films like Swades, Om Shanti Om, Dilwale, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Dear Zindagi, Paheli, Billu, Chamatkaar, Anjaam and Ram Jaane were part of the deal.
Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri, started their own production company – Red Chillies Entertainment in 2002, which is involved in movie production, VFX effects, digital marketing etc. Ever since its launch, Shah Rukh Khan is being part of the production house which has established some box office hits like Om Shaanti Om, Chennai Express, Dear Zindagi, Raees and Badla. Shah Rukh Khan also successfully established the KKR team (Kolkata Knight Riders) at the IPL Cricket series which is fetching him a worldwide popularity in the field of Cricket.
So if you would love to get inspired, use the business ideas by the King Khan.
