It's similar to artist lipsinging on stage during live concert.. you pay for value, ambience and experience not for the product.. duh..— Prem? (@Premjaiswal90) November 15, 2019
In July, actor Rahul Bose posted a video about how he was charged Rs 442 for two bananas at a five-star hotel in Chandigarh. Taking a jibe at JW Marriott, the hospitality chain, he tweeted, “You have to see this to believe it. Who said fruit wasn’t harmful to your existence? Ask the wonderful folks at @JWMarriottChd #goingbananas #howtogetfitandgobroke #potassiumforkings” Bose’s post went viral on social media and the hotel was sent a show-cause notice asking for a response as to how tax was charged on a tax-free item. The JW Marriott Hotel Chandigarh was booked for violation of Section 11 of CGST (illegal collection of tax on an exempted item) and was imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 by the Excise and Taxation Department of Chandigarh.
Following the controversy that Bose had stirred, the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) had justified the high price saying that it covered not just the commodity but also the ambience, luxury and service that the hotel provided.
