Staff shortages in health and social care have led to a surge in job listings this year, according to new data from jobs website Indeed.

Indeed on Friday published a list of the ten fastest growing jobs in the UK in 2019. Indeed is the world’s biggest job listings website and the ranking was based on its own proprietary data.

Seven of the top ten were in health and social care. Job listings for travelling nurses, who visit patients at home, were the fastest growing vacancy last year. Ads for travelling nurses surged 169% on the platform.

“Such dominance of the top 10 fastest growing jobs by the health and social care sector shows just how acute the staff shortages - and the recruitment challenges - are for many NHS trusts and local authorities,” said Bill Richards, UK managing director of Indeed.

The NHS is facing an acute staffing crisis, with a recent report warning the UK could face a nursing shortfall of over 100,000 within ten years.

“The lack of nurses across all services is the most concerning,” the report said.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to recruit 50,000 nurses into the NHS but Richards warned this target could be hard to meet.

“Increasing nurse numbers was central to the Government’s election pledges, and both it and the NHS will need to persuade thousands more people to train as nurses, or return to the profession, to fill existing vacancies let alone new ones,” Richards said.

The government plans to introduce a new fast-track visa for doctors and nurses in a bid to ease the skills shortage and has pledged additional funding for training. Earlier this week the government also did a u-turn on a decision to scarp a bursary scheme for student nurses.

Richards said: “The UK’s unemployment rate stands at just 3.8%, and while this is good news for workers, it can make attracting staff difficult for employers, public and private sector alike, as they have to work harder to woo recruits away from their current jobs.”

Here’s the listing of the ten fastest growing vacancies and the sectors they fall in:

  1. Travelling nurse (health and social care)

  2. Home care nurse (health and social care)

  3. Disability assessor (health and social care)

  4. Security guard (security)

  5. Fast food attendant (food and drink)

  6. Psychiatrist (health and social care)

  7. Registered children’s manager (health and social care)

  8. Pharmacy assistant (health and social care)

  9. Psychiatric nurse (health and social care)

  10. Custodian (security)
