IRCTC food now costlier! Check new meal rates & options for Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto & Mail/Express trains

Indian Railways passengers take note! According to a Railway Board circular date November 14, 2019, the IRCTC menu tariff or meal prices on Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express and Mail/Express trains will go up. Meals on Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express trains are optional and the catering charges form part of the fare, only when passengers opt for food. The national transporter is also revising the rates of standard meals that are available on Mail/Express trains. The new meal rates will be applicable after a period of 15 days in the system and will be applicable for an advanced reservation period of 120 days from the date of the circular.

According to an Indian Railways official that Financial Express Online spoke to, the last revision in meal charges for Mail/Express trains was made in 2012. The food tariff for Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Duronto trains was revised in 2013. The new meal charges are not applicable for Gatimaan Express, Tejas Express trains and Vande Bharat Express trains.

For example, under the new menu for these premium brand of trains, the morning tea will now cost Rs 35 in the first AC and Executive Chair Car coaches and Rs 20 in the 2nd AC, 3rd AC and Chair Car coaches. The rate for morning tea will be Rs 15 in the sleeper class of Duronto trains. This means that tea will now cost up to Rs 6 more, breakfast will cost up to Rs 7 more and lunch and dinner will cost up to Rs 15 more – depending on the class of travel.

  • For 2nd AC/3rd AC/Chair Car: Rs 105
  • For sleeper coaches in Duronto trains: Rs 65

Lunch/Dinner:

  • For 1st AC service and Executive chair car: Rs 245
  • For 2nd AC/3rd AC/Chair Car: Rs 185
  • For sleeper coaches in Duronto trains: Rs 120

Evening Tea:

  • For 1st AC service and Executive chair car: Rs 140
  • For 2nd AC/3rd AC/Chair Car: Rs 90
  • For sleeper coaches in Duronto trains: Rs 50

Indian Railways has decided to introduce the option of Chicken Curry in the Standard non-veg meals for Mail/Express trains.

Mail/Express trains: Revised IRCTC tariff for standard meals:

  • Breakfast (Veg): Rs 40
  • Breakfast (Non-veg): Rs 50
  • Standard Meal (Veg): Rs 80
  • Standard Meal (Non-Veg with Egg Curry): Rs 90
  • Standard Meal (Non-Veg with Chicken Curry): Rs 130

Also, keeping in mind the popularity of biryani as a standard meal variety, IRCTC will now make available biryani at the following new rates:

  • Veg Biryani: Rs 80
  • Egg Biryani: Rs 90
  • Chicken Biryani: Rs 110

IRCTC has also been directed to introduce a "snack meal" with regional cuisine as a meal option. The "snack meal" will cost passengers Rs 50 inclusive of GST. The revisions have been made basis recommendations by IRCTC and the Menu & Tariff Committee. Keeping in mind the needs of the common man, the cost of the Janta Meal on Mail/Express trains (7 pooris, aloo curry and pickle) has been kept unchanged at Rs 20.
