Blake Lively’s arresting presence on the red carpet placed her on top of the best-dressed list at Cannes this year, with all her outfits drawing praise. But the pregnant actress has suddenly found herself at the centre of controversy over an Instagram post, which sparked outrage from people for its alleged racist innuendo.
The controversial post shows the gorgeous actress in a glittering Versace fishtail gown, with a split image offering a view from both front and the back side. The Gossip Girl star captioned the photo — L.A. face with an Oakland booty.
The actress’ derriere looks quite prominent in the said photo, which could have prompted her to go for that caption. But not everyone was happy with her choice of words.
Some people accused her of appropriating black culture, and have branded her a racist.
Another day, another rich white woman using WOC’s bodies as a punchline and commodity. As if Blake Lively wasn’t the worst already.— Kat Bee (@katbeee)May 18, 2016
#BlakeLively “LA Face with a Oakland Booty”? Orange County mouth with a Donald Trump brain— Chris Colvard (@CNColvard)May 18, 2016
Nevertheless, majority of the tweets are in support of the actress, deeming the whole brouhaha unnecessary and stupid, given the fact that she was quoting a line from the 90s song Baby Got Back, by rapper Anthony Ray a.k.a Sir-Mix-a-Lot.
That being said, the blame should fall on the rapper.

People are RIDICULOUS. #BlakeLively is not racist. Her ig caption is a song. For the love of God people, stop pulling the racist card 24/7😩— jessica (@jli_322) May 18, 2016
Interestingly, there are several other photos that go with the hashtag #L.A. face with an Oakland booty on Instagram. Reality star Khloe Kardashian had shared a photo of hers last year with the same caption, and that image didn’t cause any stir, but got 752k likes instead.
Although racial stereotyping is a reality, calling Blake Lively a racist for quoting a line from a song is more like labelling a person at the drop of a hat.
