2020 started with a bang. Like 2019, 2020 saw a blockbuster in form of Tanhaji-The Unsung Warrior. However, there were decent to average earners which disappointed at the box office.
Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior crossed another milestone and with each passing is setting a new record at the box office. The historical drama is doing extremely well, thanks to its insane earnings in Maharasthra. The historical drama clashed with Deepika Padukone starrer Chhapaak on 10th January but had a better first week collections with Rs 118.91 crore. Due to favorable reviews, second week ended with a bang minting Rs 78.54 crore. It faced Kangana Ranaut starrer Panga and Varun Dhawan starrer Street Dancer but still collected Rs 40.42 crore in the third week. The historical drama refused to stop last week as it collected better than Saif Ali Khan starrer Jawaani Jaaneman in the fourth week with Rs 21.65 crore.
Despite the release of Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Kunal Khemu and Anil Kapoor starrer Malang and Vidhu Vinod Chopra directed Shikara yesterday, Tanhaji dropped reasonably well with Rs 1.15 crore on fifth Friday, collecting a jaw-dropping Rs 261.02 crore which is astounding as the film entered in its fifth week and is showing no sign of stopping even with reduced screen counts.
Chhapaak – 10th November
Chhapaak was already in the news thanks to stint performed by Deepika Padukone at JNU which has created huge controversy around the film. Nevertheless, the controversy did not benefit the film that much as the film opened below expectation. Chhapaak disappointed with around Rs 35 crore against a budget of Rs 45 crore
This year in the Republic day weekend, we saw the second clash of January month – Kangana Ranaut starrer Panga and Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Street Dancer 3D.
Kangana Ranaut was back with yet another performance driven film, Panga, after two mind-blowing performances last year – Manikarnika-The Queen Of Jhansi and Judgementall Hai Kya, and accompanying her was Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, who directed magnificent films like Nil Battey Sannata and Bareilly Ki Barfi. Obviously, audience had high expectations from the sports drama, Panga. Unfortunately, Panga fizzed out at the ticket window even though it got rave reviews, praising Kangana’s performance. The sports drama is running at a snail pace in theaters with few screen counts and has minted around Rs 28 crore against a budget of Rs 45 crore.
Varun Dhawan scored his second disappointment at the box office with Street Dancer 3D after giving a disaster called Kalank last year. Though Street Dancer got the second highest opening figure of 2020, the dance-drama is earning at a very low level and should up wrap around Rs 75 crore against a huge budget of Rs 95 crore. The film also starred Shraddha Kapoor and Prabhu Deva in key role.
Jawaani Jaaneman-31st January
Though January had few disappointments in form of Chhapaak, Street Dancer 3D and Panga, I would still call Saif Ali Khan starrer Jawaani Jaaneman as a breathe of fresh air since the trade would not have expected this film to touch even 20 crore mark, considering the disaster films he has delivered before – Chef, Kalakandi and Laal Kaptaan, which did not cross 10 crore.
Though Jawaani Jaaneman is made on a budget of Rs 40 crore (estimated), the earnings were stable on the weekdays as the comedy-drama performed well at the multiplexes, collecting Rs 21.25 crore after 8 days.
