Abhay Deol, Pankaj Kapur and Piyush Mishra come together for SONY LIV's web series, JL50- a sci-fi meets Indian mythology based on time travel, where a young CBI officer, Shantanu Das, played by Abhay Deol, investigates a case of a flight crash in West Bengal. Interestingly, the flight took off 35 years back and that's where the plot is set.
Piyush Mishra and Pankaj Kapur play scientists in the film who have been studying time travel. There is also Rajesh Sharma playing Abhay Deol's colleague in the film from the CBI department. Directed by Shailendra Vyas, the series has 4 episodes of approximately 30 mins each.
Good things first! The premise was interesting and the story did have meat. It was surely a more relatable way of presenting time travel in India and I am glad I didn't have to see a big lit machine with thousand senseless buttons as the time travel machine.
What's lame? The execution and lack of impactful scenes, considering the director had the creme de la creme from the acting department. The plot is interesting but the way it has been presented, could have been much better. It breaks my heart to say but all three actors performed below their calibre, as if they too lost interest in it midway. Pankaj Kapur's Bengali accent is far from sounding Bengali, and Abhay's body language is far from a CBI officer.
There are certain chase and action scenes in the series, which I felt were poorly directed. It also loses pace at various points, which I felt was a big drawback because in a thriller, it's the pace which counts a lot.
Overall, I'd suggest this series to be bingeworthy to those who like mysteries, sci-fi dramas, and don't really care much about the technicalities and of course who are fans of Abhay Deol, Pankaj Kapur and Piyush Mishra's talent, and don't mind seeing them in any form.
I'll go with 2.5 stars.
