Director Joe Russo has revealed the most heroic moment in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes courtesy of a certain scene from Avengers: Endgame featuring Black Widow.
Of course, he could only be referring to only one such incident, which saw her sacrificing her life instead of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye so that they could claim the Soul Stone.
Russo, who has directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame alongside his brother Anthony, makes this admission during the audio commentary for the newly crowned highest grossing film all time.
“At the beginning of Endgame, she wants to bring it all back because she feels like it is the strongest emotional connection that she’s ever had in her life. She’s presented with a choice, which is to give her own life to bring everyone else back and she does it Which [is] the single most heroic moment in the history of the Marvel Universe.”
That’s a bold claim, but it certainly feels appropriate. Although, Tony Stark’s own sacrifice, which sees him snapping his fingers to use the Infinity Gauntlet and defeat Thanos before then instantly dying as a result, is right up there, too.
Scarlett Johansson, who will reprise her role as Black Widow for her very own solo adventure in May 1, 2020, also opens up about the character’s demise on the audio commentary, according to CinemaBlend.
“And it is a very emotional thing, but some weird, twisted up, fateful way this character who has searched her whole life for a purpose actually finds her purpose and it’s like this amazing, super emotional, beautiful thing.”
You can hear more of Joe Russo and Scarlett Johansson’s thoughts on Avengers: Endgame when it is released on Blu-ray on August 13.
