Katy Perry has defended her decision to publicly side with Ellen DeGeneres in a tweet.

The singer explained the move in a new interview with the LA Times.

When she decided to speak out on Twitter earlier this month, saying she had only “positive takeaways” from her interactions with DeGeneres, some deemed her messages tone-deaf.

“I started that tweet off not undermining anyone else’s experience,” Perry told the newspaper.

“I wanted to only speak from my own experience. I have over 100m people that follow me on Twitter, so not everyone is going to agree with me. And I’m not here to make everyone agree with me.”

Perry was one of several A-listers who shared their support for DeGeneres amid an internal investigation into allegations that The Ellen DeGeneres Show is a toxic work environment.

DeGeneres isn’t personally a subject of the probe, a source previously told NBC News.

The host apologised in a note to staff, stating according to Variety: “On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect.

“Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry.”
