While Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are back on deck as Maverick and Iceman in the new Top Gun movie, one star is notably missing.

Kelly McGillis played Charlie Blackwood, the flight instructor and astrophysicist who falls for Cruise's arrogant fighter pilot.

But it seems that Charlie was never in the frame for the reboot.

Asked if she'd be attending any of the promotional events for Top Gun: Maverickshe told Entertainment Tonight: “You know what, I don't know how to answer that because one, it hasn't happened.

“Two, if and when it did happen, I would have to assess where I am, what I'm doing, what's going on. I can't project what I would or wouldn't do in the future. I have no idea because I don't know where I'll be.”

She went on: “Movies are odd things. I don't really keep in touch with anybody.

“I think I've spoken to a couple of people occasionally, but the truth is, movies are very odd work situations because you have a lot of people who come together from all different parts of the world.”

After a string of high profile roles, in movies like The Accused with Jodie Foster and Witness with Harrison Ford, McGillis retreated from the spotlight, taking only a few roles in the late 90s, and then not acting at all for several years in the early 2000s.

She went on to tell ET that she left Hollywood and 'got sober', while taking 'on a journey to figure out who the hell' she was.

“I think just my priorities in life changed,” she said.

“It wasn't like a major decision that I made to leave, it was just that other things became more important. I love acting, I love what I do, I love doing theatre, but I don't know. To me, my relationships to other people became far more important than my relationship to fame.

“I am a home person. I'm really rooted in my home life ... I can't remember the last time I worked. I feel really blessed that I don't have to work, you know? But I get the option to work, so I'm really blessed in that way. Not many people get that option later in life, so I feel very lucky.”

Top Gun: Maverick will arrive in cinemas in June, 2020.
