42-year-old Kushal Punjabi committed suicide at his Pali Hill flat by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. His near and dear ones were devastated and some of them expressed their grief.
We had reported that his failed marriage and his consequent despair drove him to take the drastic step. Just 2 days before his death, he was partying with Shilpa Saklani, Apurva Agnihotri, Meet Bros and several others at a gathering held by Kushal Tandon.
Here is what Kushal Tandon told us EXCLUSIVELY:
It’s sad that Kushal Punjabi is no more. Did he seem in any despair when you guys partied together 48 hours before his death?
Nobody behaves abnormal at a party, people are usually at their best. He was good. And when I got to know about the tragedy, I just couldn't believe it. But whatever his reason, he should not have done this. He had a father, mother, sister and son. Ending your life is absolute foolishness. You need to take care of yourself for your parents, your siblings and your every near-n-dear one. You can't imagine what they will go through if you end your life.
If it's about depression, let me tell you that every person goes through it. Depression is a phase and people should talk about it, it's high time.
You must have met Kushal's parents and sister after his death...
As soon as I got to know, I was there by his family's side. As my name is also Kushal, his mother was very emotional and I sat with her for nearly an hour. Even she asked me if her son was okay at my party.
See, Kushal Punjabi was not my friend per se, but we were very good colleagues.
May God give his family enough strength. I want to send out a message to everyone that please don't take such a step ever. Depression can be treated. I feel like I should take a mic and speak to the world that what the hell is happening? Think about those who gave birth to you. Talk it out. Be good to each other.
Is depression becoming common in actors?
Please don't categorise. Depression is not limited to just one profession--- it happens in corporate world, in medical world, you name any profession and it's there. Every human grapples with financial issues and personal issues. Let us just support each other.
Most of us still feel that going to psychiatrist is a taboo. Is that the reason why several people undergoing depression don't get themselves treated?
Yes. If you see in the US, they talk it out. I think you should be your own psychiatrist first and second, bring your family/friends into the picture. If a husband-wife go through frequent arguments and a fractured relationship, why do they have to go to a psychiatrist? The problem is between two people. How can a third person judge you, decide what exactly has gone wrong and take money for it?
Kushal has been very irresponsible to have ended his life.
