The Valentino haute couture gown was discovered at the Beverly Hilton hotel the day after the awards, after Lady Gaga allegedly left it there.
According to the auction house behind the sale, the maid at the hotel who found the dress brought it to the hotel’s lost and found and, after it remained unclaimed for months, was given it back to keep.
Later today the dress is due to be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders auctioneers, with a starting price of $8,000 (approx £6,210).
The auctioneers include a “Letter of Authenticity”, written by the housekeeper in which she explains how the dress came to be in her possession.
“I work as a Housekeeper at the Beverly Hilton Hotel,” the handwritten letter reads. “I’m always present working in the Golden Globe events on January every year for 24 years.
“The artist ‘Lady Gaga’ left me this dress that she used for the day of the awards. I turned in the dress to lost and found on the 8th of January 2019. After the time legally held by lost and found they gave it to me as a gift from her and today I want to auction the dress.”
According to CNN, the Beverly Hills Police Department responded to a call made last week “about a possible theft investigation.”
“During the investigation, it was determined that a designer dress which had been missing had recently been placed up for private auction,” read the police statement, according to CNN.
“It was determined that no crime had taken place. The police do not have an active criminal investigation. The matter is being resolved between the concerned parties.”
A spokesperson for Nate D. Sanders Auctions told Yahoo UK: “Nate D. Sanders Auctions prides itself on having legitimate and correct provenance on all items it places in the company's monthly auctions.
“Our research confirms the dress was given to the Beverly Hilton lost and found department, where it stayed for almost nine months.
“The hotel, in accordance with its longstanding policy, released the dress when no one claimed the item.
“The consignor has a receipt from the Hilton Beverly Hills Lost and Found Department and documentation, which accompanies the dress for auction.”
Lady Gaga’s dress was one of the most recognisable outfits at this year’s Golden Globes, which saw the star taking home the prestigious accolade for best original song.
The bespoke Valentino couture dress, designed by Valentino's creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, was rumoured to have given a nod to the dress one worn by Judy Garland in the 1954 original.
Yahoo UK has contacted Valentino and the Beverly Hills Hotel for comment and will update the article with any response.
