Just days after the Love Island final, it has been revealed that only six contestants that appeared on this year’s show, went through the standard application process.

Every year, thousands of people apply for a place in the villa in the hope of finding love and fame over the course of summer.

However, it has now been revealed that the process was overtaken by the show’s casting team who sourced 24 of the total 36 contestants that headed to Spain for the latest series.

The remaining six were put forward by professional agents.

However, it is not known which contestants were contacted in which way.

According to Sky News, the discovery was made in a document that was requested by MPs on the digital, culture, media and sport committee during an investigation on reality TV.

ITV chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said in a statement: “On series five of Love Island to date (15 July), there have been 36 contributors.

“Twenty-four were found and cast by the programme's casting team, six were put forward by professional agents and six came through the general application process."

The competition ended on Monday 29 July after eight weeks and saw Greg O’Shea and Amber Gill win £50,000 which they shared between them.

Speaking about their victory, Gill revealed what she was planning to do with the prize money.

“I’ll definitely get at least one designer item and then I’ll save the rest,” she told the Metro.

Meanwhile, O’Shea confirmed that he and Gill were exclusive after their whirlwind romance.

“I don’t think it’s in our nature to see other people...we’re both very loyal and we’re definitely only going to be seeing each other."
