'Luxury in its truest form': This opulent home in south Delhi screams 'maximalist'

Punam Karla, founder of design studio I’m, The Centre for Applied Arts is known for her sensory indulgent designs that blend modern technology with traditional crafting techniques. In this sprawling South Delhi residence, the interior designer wanted to “express luxury in its truest form; in a softer, rhythmic design expression, and a choice of unique textures and materials, with a delicately balanced visual consistency.”

Drawing on a modern-maximalist aesthetic, she curates a space that’s rich in contrasts. Cool marble warms up to earthy woods and plush velvets. Hand-carved wooden furniture is juxtaposed with precision-cut, titanium-coated metal detailing. A neutral palette is punctuated by jewel tones, metallic accents and crystal lighting solutions.

In the capacious living area, curvilinear, earth-toned, velvet sofa sets are offset by red, neo-modern chairs and metallic throw cushions.

A rich material palette draws the eye upward. This includes: suede wall panelling with metal inlay work, a gold-toned decorative jaali and a Victorian-inspired crystal chandelier.

The laser-cut, gold-toned jaali motif extends to the dining area where it serves as a functional screen. The eight-seater dining table features a semi-precious rose quartz tabletop. It’s complemented by white, upholstered chairs with brass lionhead detailing. Completing the luxe space is a linear crystal chandelier, a metal-accent console and modern wallpaper.

A tufted-suede wall panelling defines the bedroom. Its striped, metallic trimmings are echoed in the linear wooden cupboard. The sculptural, velvet-upholstered bed softens the otherwise linear details of the space. Note the space-savvy, modern chaise tucked beneath the window.
