Maharashtra govt formation HIGHLIGHTS: Issue of leadership not pending anymore, says Sharad Pawar

Maharashtra govt formation LIVE updates: The Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP are likely to make a formal announcement on Friday.

Maharashtra Government Formation HIGHLIGHTS: The newly-formed Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP alliance on Friday unanimously proposed Uddhav Thackeray's name for the post of chief minister in Maharashtra, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said. "Uddhav will lead the Maharashtra government," Pawar told reporters after an hour-long meeting with top leaders in Mumbai.

Earlier in the day, Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting with party legislators and assured that the process of forming the government was in the final stages. NCP leader Jayant Patil, on the other hand, said the smaller pre-poll allies of his party and the Congress have backed the idea of forming a government with the Shiv Sena to keep the BJP away from power in the state.

Maharashtra was plunged into a political crisis after the Sena broke its three-decade-long ties with the BJP after the latter declined to share the chief minister's post. The BJP and Sena, which fought the Assembly polls in alliance, had secured a comfortable majority by winning 105 and 56 seats, respectively, in the 288-member Assembly. The NCP and the Congress, pre-poll allies, won 54 and 44 seats, respectively.
