While 2020 started with a bang as January saw the blockbuster in form of Tanhaji while February saw some decent performers like Malang and Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhaan. However, the Corona Virus scare engulfed more than 50% of the profit for Bollywood films in March.
Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Taapsee Pannu starrer Thappad performed better than expected at the box office thanks to the powerful message, riveting drama and strong direction. Thappad faced two previous week’s releases – Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhaan and Vicky Kaushal starrer Bhoot but still managed to collect Rs 30.53 crore against a budget of Rs 25 (approx).

Baaghi 3 – 6th March
Thanks to solid promotion, astounding trailer and popularity of Tiger Shroff, Shraddha Kapoor and the Baaghi franchise, Baaghi 3 became the best opening weekend film of 2020 beating Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji, with a solid Rs 90.67 crore in its first week. Due to Corona Virus scare across India, cinema halls started shutting down and with the release of much awaited Irrfan Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Radhika Madan and Deepak Dobriyal starrer Angrezi Medium. Baaghi 3 suffered at the ticket window, collecting a mere Rs 5.83 crore in its second week, bringing the total to Rs 96.5 crore at the budget of Rs 100 crore.
Directed by Hardik Mehta and produced by Shah Rukh Khan, under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment, Kaamyaab starred the talented Sanjay Mishra. The film already won the rave reviews across the film festivals across the world. However, due to the timing of release and clashing with Baaghi 3 at the same time, it turned out to be a disaster at the box office, collecting just Rs 1.16 crore against a budget of Rs 7 crore.
Angrezi Medium-21st February
Much was expected from Angrezi Medium considering the popularity build by Hindi Medium when it was released in 2017. Despite receiving rave reviews, Angrezi Medium got hit by the Corona Virus issue which led to the shutdown of the cinema halls starting from 13th March, 2020, the same day Irrfan Khan starrer released. The user reviews of Angrezi Medium was excellent which has led to the opening of Rs 4.03 crores on the first day and has beaten the opening day figure of Hindi Medium which collected Rs 2.81 crore on its first day. As the Corono virus situation got worst, all the cinema hall shut down due to which Angrezi Mediumn managed to put up a total of Rs 10.21 crore against a budget of Rs 35 crore.
