After two films which failed to make a mark at the box-office, Milap Milan Zaveri was almost written-off as a director. That, however, is a thing of the past as the writer-director has now bounced back with two solid successes….
Nothing succeeds like success, they say. Milap Milan Zaveri, who was almost written off after the debacle of his sex-comedy ‘Mastizaade’ (2016), has now delivered two successful films in a row. Last year, his film ‘Satyameva Jayate’ worked not only for him but became one of the biggest solo hits in John Abraham’s career. Likewise, ‘Marjaavaan’, which released last week, has given a new lease of life to Sidharth Malhotra’s career.
Milap, who started off as a writer with films like ‘Kaante’(2002) and ‘Jhankaar Beats’ (2003), had several successful films to his credit as a screenplay/dialogue writer. His career as a director, though, started off on a bad note. ‘Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai’, his first film, failed to leave a mark at the box-office. In a recent interview with PopDiaries.com, he had stated, “I think ‘Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai’ is a film which did not get its due. It was my first film as a director and I made it with a lot of love. There was romance, comedy and good music in the film. It was a well-packaged film and it will always remain special to me. I just wish it had done better.”.
While ‘Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai’, despite performing poorly at the box-office, saw some good reviews coming its way, ‘Mastizaade’ did not have any such luck. Milap then changed gears and made a short film titled ‘Raakh’ which made all the right noises and made the industry take notice of him as a director. The Vir Das – Richa Chadha – Shaad Randhawa starrer short was released online and was received very well by the audience. Soon enough, an action thriller was announced with John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee in the lead roles. Interestingly, this film was also titled ‘Raakh’ initially but was later rechristened ‘Satyameva Jayate’. The film released on Independence Day last year and the rest, as they say, is history.
‘Marjaavaan’, Milap’s fourth film as a director was set in a similar space as ‘Satyameva Jayate’; as stated in many interviews, he is clear about the fact that he wants to continue making films in this genre. The Sidharth Malhotra – Riteish Deshmukh starrer has been steady at the box-office and is heading towards the 50 mark at the box-office. For a moderately budgeted film, this is a good result.
Now, all eyes are set on ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’. The film reunites Milap with John Abraham and also features Divya Khosla Kumar. Just like ‘Satyameva Jayate’, one expects it to deliver action, romance, humour and masala, though in larger doses.
