Meghan McCain visits father's grave on his birthday: 'I love you'

Meghan McCain is remembering her father, John McCain, on what would have been his 83rd birthday. The View co-host shared a photo of her visiting his grave, which is adorned with flags, flowers and some Arizona flair. She kept her tribute short and sweet: "Happy birthday Dad. I love you.”

It's been a difficult week for the McCains as the one-year anniversary of the senator's death was on Aug. 25. Meghan called it the "worst day" of her life, adding, "grief is omnipresent and relentless."

The 34-year-old television personality has been taking a break from social media this week. "Remember to cherish your loved ones," she tweeted on Saturday. "I still can’t believe my heart didn’t stop when yours did, Dad.."

The six-term senator from Arizona chose to be buried in the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, forgoing the traditional burial at Arlington National Cemetery. McCain's headstone is next to longtime friend Admiral Charles "Chuck" Larson. In his memoir, the war hero described what would be his final resting place as "a beautiful spot" that is "near where our paths first crossed." He wrote he would "take my leave bound for a place near my old friend Chuck Larson, in the cemetery on the Severn [River], back where it began." McCain and Larson graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958. Cindy McCain will also be laid to rest there.
