Movie : Mission Mangal
Director : Jagan Shakti
Rating : 3.5/5
Plot : Based on true events of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launching the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), making it the least expensive mission to Mars, Mission Mangal is based on the experiments and the adventures of the brights scientists who executed this mission which bought unmatched glory to the nation. Led by Rakesh Dhawan played by Akshay Kumar, who is one of a type scientist, and is backed up by Tara, Kritika, Eka, Neha, Varsha played by Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari and Nithya Menon respectively.
After the failure of a major mission led by Rakesh, it was already a lot on his head and had a lot to prove as well. As soon as Vidya’s character encourages him to send a satellite to orbit the planet Mars, he gets inspired by her idea and proposes a new mission to the ISRO head but is made fun by the other seniors and team members owing to his techniques & methods used which are based on simple home-science techniques. What follows next is downright inspiring, teaches you about why it is so important dream and a feel good film about India and ISRO.
What We Liked : All the characters in the film teach you a thing or two right from Vidya’s persistence to Akshay’s never say never spirit or be it Kirti’s battle against the society’s double-standards. Every character is so well-defined and their stories have been shown so precisely and finely that the audience is able to get the gist of each character to the T. Also, we have to give full marks to the narrative which is extremely enjoyable and carves out comedy from day to day life’s instances. The healthy & beautiful bond and the natural chemistry among all the leading ladies is a rare sight to see to say the least as it doesn’t happen in B-Town. Right from Sonakshi’s charismatic aura to Kirti’s empathetic vibe and not to forget, Taapsee’s selfless love for her husband, we found one thing beautiful and enriching about each character in Mission Mangal. Last but not the least, the scene where Sanjay Kapoor who plays Vidya’s husband dances to the tunes of his own old super-hit number Ankhiyaan Milaaun Kabhi Ankhiyaan Churaaun, is a sight to behold.
Coming to the performances, Akshay and Vidya stand out and natural actors like Taapsee and Kirti add depth to the film.
What We Did Not : The two supportive male characters played by Sharman Joshi and H. G. Dattatreya could have added a lot to the film’s insight but failed to do so. Also, we expected a lot from the film’s music which is a disappointing aspect to the film.
