06 Feb 2021: Mumbai court seeks progress report on probe against Kangana Ranaut
A magistrate court in Mumbai has asked the Amboli Police to submit a progress report of the inquiry it had directed against actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister over alleged hateful posts on social media.
The police has already missed several deadlines for presenting the report in this case.
Last year, a case was registered against Ranaut for spreading hatred between communities.
Context: Court had ordered inquiry in October last year
In October 2020, the magistrate court had asked suburban Amboli Police to conduct an inquiry into a complaint filed by lawyer Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh related to alleged objectionable statements by the 33-year-old actor.
As per the court's order, the cops were supposed to file a report by December 5, 2020.
Later, the deadline was extended by a month, but no report was filed.
Deadline: Matter posted for further hearing on March 4
Mumbai cops were then asked to file the said report by February 5, but they are yet to do so.
"Since they have failed to do so, I asked the court to issue process directly to the accused. Thus, the court called for a progress report (from the police)," Deshmukh reportedly said.
The court has posted the matter for further hearing on March 4.
Fact: This is what Deshmukh told the court in the complaint
"Both the accused are together known for raising unnecessary controversies every now and then, be it allegations against actor Hrithik Roshan, Aditya Pancholi or even against the big media groups including the respectful journalist and also many other hard-working people from the Bollywood industry (sic)."
Cases: Lately, Ranaut has been surrounded by legal cases
Since the untimely demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, Ranaut has been voicing her opinion on social media platforms about various political matters.
Cases were also filed against her by the members of the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party for supposedly making demeaning statements against its chief Upendra Kushwaha.
Another case was filed against her for defaming an elderly woman seen at the farmers' protest.
